I do conduct business based on other folks recommendations, as I'm sure a lot of people do. I regularly shop or do business with companies who have been recommended to me by friends. One of my favorite companies I deal with for electronics is Newegg.com. They have superior customer service. They, unfortunately, do not carry marine electronics. But if they did... On land the timing is usually not a critical as when on a boat, so it seems more frustrating when your living on a boat. One time I do, and I wish everyone else did, is give the name of the company you dealt with.
